Although sturdy enough, the cabin is primitive, and it sits by itself on the shore of a remote mountain lake. On the other hand, Loretta has many memories of the happy times she spent there with her late father. Now that her life has become too full of unhappy times, it seems the perfect place to hide for awhile. What she doesn't know is that something else has come to the same conclusion.
Her choice of a sanctuary will soon make her unique among all the human beings who have ever lived.
An Alien in the Lake eBook Joe Usseglio Carlie McIsaac Sam Cohen
There’s a small town of 1500 people in southern New Hampshire with a country store that serves pretty good coffee in a paper cup. Three wooden chairs crowd a tiny table set against the front window, and occasionally a few locals drink their coffee there. That’s where I met Joe Usseglio a few years ago, and eventually found out that this solid-looking, easy-grinning guy in work clothes had published seven novels on Amazon. Joe explained that he had used optical character recognition (OCR) software to scan the original typed copy of his first book, An Alien in the Lake, to create the digital version; he had already done some computer programming to clean up the inevitable OCR errors, but as a compulsive copy editor who marks up magazines and paperback novels at home, I offered to look through the text—and found a masterpiece.Reading this book was a pure delight. While technically a science-fiction novel, the author keeps the science short, simple, and plausible. You’re immediately drawn into the story and quickly connect with the two main characters; one is smart, competent, and witty, the other smart, competent, and pretty. The writing carries the story smoothly, with short paragraphs and no distracting side trips for author’s commentary disguised as narrative; dialog is similarly natural and unforced. The book is a fun story, delivered by a master story-teller with intelligence and humor. And it’s a fine demonstration that skillful writing is like a woman’s properly applied make-up: carefully crafted and used to great effect, but unobtrusive. The book is light, as opposed to dark, and would make a great read for anyone looking for a short novel that will leave you in a good mood.
OK, two spoilers (sort of): (1) The book won’t strain your vocabulary, with one exception (for most readers): look up the word “plastron.” (2) The author is an Anglophile, and despite my earnest pleadings, insisted that his character buy “tins,” not boxes, of tea.
And no, I got paid for neither the copy editing nor the review. (!!)

An Alien in the Lake eBook Joe Usseglio Carlie McIsaac Sam Cohen Reviews
This is an imaginative well-written (and somewhat unique) book, and likely the start of a fun series.
Spoilers follow.
Basically a crusty alien that looks like a large tortoise crash lands in a lake and makes friends with a young woman.
After several twists and turns, the story ends with the prospect of the alien and the heroine heading off to the wider universe.
